My first book event
And connecting with (potential) readers
My agent Lucy emailed me a few months ago to tell me that Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival wanted me to do an event with them about my book Learning to Fall. I was practically vibrating with excitement - the book is only available for sale in US and Canada so I wasn’t expecting to be booked for any events at all.
It was so much fun to do a live recording of a podcast with Lucy Keefe, an author of fantasy mystery books. We went off on a few delightful tangents and talked a lot about stories and how characters are made. I read out a small part of chapter 3, when Casey goes to see her first roller derby bout, and I had a lovely time chatting with some skaters from Apex Predators Roller Derby who came to say hi after the event.
The next day, four teams battled it out for their final positions in Tier 2 South of the 2025 Five Nations tournament, and I was there to operate the scoreboard. I also set up a little table with some display copies of my book and some free bookmarks, and had a wonderful time talking to people about it. It was a good mixture of those who already knew about it and had pre-ordered it, and those who had no idea it existed. I think I convinced a few people to order a copy from their local indie, and it was truly magical to be asked to sign bookmarks for the first time.
A fantastic weekend that’s left me very low on energy and words today! I’m very excited for book release day tomorrow, and am loving all the reviews that are coming in. See you next week!
Up-to-date links of where you can order Learning to Fall are always at my linktree, and I’ll soon be adding dates of upcoming roller derby games where you can catch me shoving bookmarks at anyone who stands still for longer than 5 seconds.
